Welcome to Room 224
MATHEMATICS: Go Math! is the curriculum used at Alpenglow Elementary. Students and families have a great tool that accompanies the program! ThinkCentral.com is where families can go to find homework (No more lost assignments!), tests, and practice material.
The math topic for Chapter 10 is Geometry: Area. Students will be learning how to solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. They will also work on developing an understanding of statistical thinking. Our lessons include:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS: The area of language arts consists of spelling, phonics, writing, grammar, reading skills, and literature study. Students will be using interactive notebooks as well as trade books to reinforce, enhance, and learn skills to help them become better readers and writers.
Social Studies: Students will continue learning about 20th Century conflicts including: The years between WWI and WWII, WWII, Human & Civil Rights, and The Cold War. I will continue supplementing with interactive notebooking, so students have a text to refer back to throughout the school year. If you would like more information about this unit of study, please visit this link.
Science: We will study energy, we will look at different types of energy, energy transformations, energy conduction & convection, and energy conservation. This semester students will also be completing a project for the science fair. This project will be mandatory, not optional.
Monday: Art/Health & P.E.
Tuesday: Library (Band & Orchestra)
Thursday: None (Band & Orchestra)
Friday: Music (Band & Orchestra)
Band and Orchestra are offered in elementary school at the 6th grade level only. This is a great opportunity for students to learn to play an instrument. If a student does not already have an instrument, that's ok! The ASD Music Department can work with families! Students not participating in band or orchestra will take part in a music appreciation class. This is not the same as the classroom music class taught to all students by Mr. Baranow.
Students will have assignments that will be completed in our Google Classroom. This is a secure online environment within the Anchorage School District Google container. ALL students and teachers within the Anchorage School District have a secured ASD Google Drive account. This is not a social media site, though students may comment and interact within the Classroom. This interaction is monitored by me. I encourage parents to also join our Google Classroom so they can support their child's learning and growing.
